Shigella’s morphology :

  1. Short
  2. Gram negative
  3. Rod shaped
  4. Non motile
  5. Non sporing
  6. Non capsulated
  7. Fimbriae may present
  8. 0.5 micrometre X 1-3 micrometre

Culture characteristics :

  • Aerobes
  • Facultative anaerobes
  • 37 degree C temp
  • 7.4 PH
  1. Mckonkey agar : colour less
  2. Ordinary media : small, circular, convex,smooth, translucent
  3. DCA media : selective media
  4. Wilson & blair bismuth sulphite agar : no growth

Biochemical reaction :

  • Catalase positive
  • Oxidase negative
  • MR positive
  • Reduces nitrates to nitrites

Types :

  • S. dysenteriae
  • S.flexneri
  • S. boydii
  • S.sonnei

Mode of transmission :

  1. Sexually
  2. Through flies
  3. Contaminated food

Virulence factor :

  1. Shiga Toxin
    1. Inhibits protein synthesis
    2. Inhibits 28s subunit of 60s subunit ribosome
  2. Endotoxin
    1. Intestinal inflammation & ulceration

Clinical presentation :

  • Watery diarrhea
  • Anorexia
  • Bloody stool
  • Abdominal cramps

Pathogenicity :

Infects the epithelial cells of villi in the large intestine
multiply
Spreading laterally to involve adjacent cell
Penetrate into lamina propria
Inflammatory reaction develops with capillary thrombosis
Leading to necrosis of patches of epithelium
Slough off
Ulceremia | bacteremia
